Targa Wrest Point

As an avid car driver and motorbike rider, one of my favourite things about Tasmania are the gorgeous, twisty, mountain roads.  It is the natural choice for a targa event, and the ongoing success of the original Targa Tasmania has led to the creation of a national targa championship which now includes a second targa event...

A Day in Bangkok with the Olympus E-M5

Let me get one thing out of the way. I love the design philosophy behind the new generation of mirrorless interchangable-lens cameras. Personally I've been a member of the Micro Four-Thirds camp since the Panasonic GF-1 came about, but I have plenty of respect for the other competing systems as well. There have...

Sports Photography Tip #1 – What are you actually trying to capture?

When you're photographing sports, what are you trying to achieve? What are you trying to capture in those photographs? These are questions I don't think many people ask themselves, and unfortunately that's why there are so many ordinary sports photos out there. People simply get caught up in the sport itself. They...

Plaza de Sant Felip Neri

Here's a story of a photograph I took in Plaza de Sant Felip Neri, a small plaza hidden among a tangle of alleyways in Barcelona. I was wandering aimlessly through Barcelona's gothic quarter in early 2011. I had my camera in hand and was simply exploring this gorgeous city. I had been walking through a maze of mainly-deserted...

Amanda and Stephen’s Wedding

I was recently given the wonderful (if exhausting) task of photographing Amanda and Stephen's epic wedding for Chris Brown. Their unforgettable day spanned four locations beginning in Perth's southern suburbs, then heading to the Swan Valley before Hillary's Boat Harbour and finally Joondalup Resort. I have to admit...

Sari and Shannon’s Wedding

I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful wedding on Saturday for Sari and Shannon at Mulberry on Swan in Perth's Swan Valley. It's always a pleasure for me to shoot weddings and I always meet some lovely people on the day, but this couple and their friends and family were particularly warm, friendly,...

Camera Toss Photo Fun

One of the really good things about photography these days is the wide availability of water-proof, shock-proof, and disposable cameras.  And the quality is improving while prices are dropping every day.  More than ever before it's easy to take photographs in ways that would have been prohibitive just...

The Heart of Australia – Uluru (Ayers Rock)

In my previous blog entry I mentioned that I'm currently in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia. In that blog entry I spoke about Kata Tjuta and how amazing it was to visit, but of course a person can't come to this part of the world and not visit Australia's most famous icon; Uluru...

Walking Through Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)

Here I am in outback Australia. This is beyond the black stump, the middle of nowhere, out back of Bourke, woop-woop, or any other nickname you can think of for a remote area.  I'm actually in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the southern part of the Northern Territory.  If you don't know where that is, find a map of Australia...

Create Your Own Luck

See the photo above? You can click on it to see the full photo. Now guess at where it was taken, how long the photoshoot lasted, who the girls were, and how much mucking around there was to get the lighting and backdrop right. If you guessed that it was taken outdoors in the middle of a city street with four girls...

Deserted Claremont Showgrounds

I recently had an opportunity to take photographs at the Claremont showgrounds while it was deserted. For the benefit of non-local readers, these huge grounds host the Perth Royal Show every year and occassional other events throughout the year. But there's nothing on at the moment. I love the deserted carnival atmosphere....

Becoming a Better Photographer #3 – Shoot Wide or Tight?

A trap that many people fall into when photographing an event is to try to capture everything in a single shot. An overview shot can be very useful to give a sense of the whole environment, but don't expect it to capture many specific details or communicate anything more than a general sense of being there.  It's very...

Becoming a Better Photographer #2 – Zoom With Your Feet

In my previous post I mentioned the term "zoom with your feet" which means to physically walk around your subject instead of standing still and using your zoom lens to do the work for you. So why zoom with your feet? I'm glad you asked. Firstly and foremost, walking up to and around the subject shows you just how many...

Becoming a Better Photographer #1 – Look in the Mirror

This is the first in a series of tips that I hope might help people become better photographers. It's aimed at regular people who have a bit of an interest in photography, but might not really know where to go from there. The tips I include here are the kinds of things I might suggest to a friend of relative when I see them...

The Story Behind my Business Card

For my first blog topic I'll discuss the story behind the little photo of a kid in a wetsuit that some of you may recognise as featuring on my business cards. It is a photo my Mum took of me when I was very young, circa 1979. We stopped at a friend's house for coffee after school one day, and there happened to be an adult-sized...
