Camera Toss Photo Fun

One of the really good things about photography these days is the wide availability of water-proof, shock-proof, and disposable cameras.  And the quality is improving while prices are dropping every day.  More than ever before it’s easy to take photographs in ways that would have been prohibitive just a few years ago.

Which leads us to a really fun shooting technique.. the camera toss!

All you need is a camera you can safely throw high in the air which has a self-timer.  The rest is self-explanatory.  You click the shutter, wait a few seconds, then throw the camera up as high as you can (without hitting anything or anyone).  With practice you can time the shot to happen near the top of the arc.

Of course the camera will rotate and you don’t have much control over what will be in the photo, but that’s half the fun.  Experiment with fast and slow rotation.  You can end up with some bizarre results.  The more photos you take, the more fun you’ll have.

In these particular examples (in Cairns, Northern Queensland) I used a friend and a waterproof camera (a GoPro Hero), but there are many ways you can have fun with this technique.
